What happened

Background
On June 20, 2023, Anthony Arriaga filed an amended complaint. The amended complaint included additional information about the conduct attributed to the John and Jane Doe defendants. Arriaga had also filed a June 15 letter attaching a transfer order documenting his transfer from Sing Sing Correctional Facility on August 5, 2022. The court treated that transfer order as attached to the amended complaint.
Identification of Unnamed Defendants
The court noted that a person representing himself in court is entitled to assistance from the district court in identifying an unnamed defendant. The court therefore directed the New York State Attorney General, by July 14, 2023, to determine the identity of each John or Jane Doe defendant and provide the address where each could be served with the lawsuit.
Other Deadline and Disposition
The court stated that the deadline for all defendants to answer, file a motion, or otherwise respond to the amended complaint remained August 31, 2023. Chambers was directed to mail a copy of the order to Arriaga at the address on the docket. Judge Vincent L. Briccetti's order addressed identification and service-related procedures; it did not decide the merits of Arriaga's claims.
